Pendants made from greenstone or pounamu were originally traditionally carved in New Zealand by the Maori people. Great care and attention to detail was given to these pieces as they were then given as gifts and were received as a great honour because the spirit of the carver was believed to be inside the carving. To this day tradition dictates that if you buy a pendant for yourself it should be first placed around your neck by another person as if you were receiving a gift. Each of the various designs used in jade or greenstone pendants has a significant meaning.
