Create a truly unique hand knitted garment from this striking hand painted possum, silk and merino wool yarn. Browse through the colour options or photos to get the full range of solid colours for these lovely natural fibre combination yarns, including our new colour addition: pistachio.

The luxury blend of 60% merino wool, 30% possum fur and 10% Mulberry silk is super soft and incredibly warm making a great choice for everyday garments.

Each skein of 100 grams has around 240 metres ( 262.467 yards) of yarn which is stated to be an 'ultrafine 8ply'. The manufacturer recommends using a 3.75mm – 4mm needle, but we would suggest knitting it as a 4ply yarn on 2.75mm and 3.25mm needles as this will give you a firmer knitted garment. Ensure you knit with a firm tension as it may stretch when knitted loosely. It is recommend that 3-5 skeins are needed to complete an adult garment.

To achieve an even distribution of colour throughout your garment, use two balls at once, knitting two rows from each ball, carrying the yarn up the side of the garment.

Hand wash in warm water and dry flat. Do not iron. Dry cleanable.

Proudly New Zealand made by Touch Yarns.

Touch - Possum Silk Merina 8py ultrafine yarn - amazing

Published by Bronwyn on 1st Jun 2021

I'm an Aussie and since working in New Zealand in the 90's I've been a fan of possum as a super warm fiber (also knowing I'm doing something for the NZ environment at the same time I can enjoy the cute but destructive critters eating many of my plants here in Melbourne - yes, they like chili too...) During lockdown v.1. in Melbourne in 2020, I had my 80yo mother with me and to keep her busy, I set her forth knitting beanies with this amazing yarn (and a few scarves for me! Done with protest, I might add...). The finished product weighs only 40-45gm and is super warm, and not itchy. I have given so many away to friends and colleagues (our winters are chilly) and they have been much loved as a garment and as a gift. As long as my mother continues to knit willingly (I may have to learn...), I'll keep coming back. Sorry if I have contributed to the stock shortages!! All the best, Bronwyn

Absolutely love this yarn. Beautiful to knit with. Was bought to knit for my husband and will now be purchasing more to make something for myself. Would just like to add from the minute of ordering to delivery of product was excellent, with regular updates of where my items were. Would recommend anyone to use The Tin Shed for their knitting needs.

I love this yarn, I’ve made so many beanies for friends and family since I discovered it, and they all love them ‘it’s so light, yet warm’ etc etc Also big ups to The Tin Shed for fixing a delivery mixup very swiftly.

Touch - Possum Silk Merino Ultrafine 8ply Yarn

I first purchased 2 skeins of this wonderful yarn while visiting New Zealand and the Tin Shed. A friend and I each knit wonderfully warm and light weight winter caps with it. I have reordered twice and my knitted projects have been gratefully received by those to whom I have gifted them. The yarn is similar to alpaca but even nicer. I really love the warmth, but lighter weight of my projects! Thank you for this yarn!

    Merino and possum yarn

Published by Emily Wied on 11th Feb 2018

I purchased this yarn about ten years ago for myself and some for a gift while visiting the Tin Shed. My friend and I both knit caps with it and absolutely love the warmth and lightness in weight they have. I just recently sent for a couple more skeins for another nice project. I hope it continues to be available. Thank you for carrying it, Tin Shed!

Soft and warm and easy to knit

Published by Cheryl on 13th Apr 2016

A lovely wool to knit with. Managed to put into balls fairly easily by wrapping it around the top of a chair and balling it that way (my husbands suggestion). It is expensive but I think worth the money as it is much cheaper to knit a garment than purchase one in the stores, especially in Australia, as possum knitwear is very expensive .Would highly recommend this yarn
